Which work this covers
These rules apply to creator images, audio recordings, videos and writing carrying this notice or an explicit reference to this policy. Creators choose whether to apply Standard, Moderate, Strict or Hardcore Art Shield to their work. This policy does not designate every asset or page on the website as protected.
Profile pictures and profile cover photos are excluded from this creator-work protection.
Uses requiring permission
Do not use covered work to train or fine-tune an AI or machine-learning model, or include it in a training dataset, without the rights holder’s prior written permission. This includes collecting or supplying covered images, recordings, videos or writing for those purposes.
Who can give permission
Contact the creator or rights holder identified with the work. What’s New does not take ownership of their work or grant training rights on their behalf.
Public visibility, a download, a purchase or passing an Art Shield viewing check does not by itself grant training permission. This notice does not revoke a separate valid authorization or determine uses permitted by applicable law.
Viewing and search
Ordinary viewing and the page owner’s separate AI-search setting are distinct from permission to train a model. Appearing in search results is not permission to add work to a training dataset.
Machine-readable notice
The JSON policy publishes this restriction, its scope and its version in What’s New’s policy format. The current version 2 is available at /restricted-use/v2.json. The original image-only version 1 remains unchanged at /restricted-use/v1.json. The unversioned /restricted-use.json identifies the current policy.
In image XMP, plus:DataMining uses the IPTC/PLUS value http://ns.useplus.org/ldf/vocab/DMI-PROHIBITED-AIMLTRAINING. xmpRights:UsageTerms contains the written restriction and this page’s address. New rights-statement references use /restricted-use; existing creator and copyright information is retained.
Protected audio, video and writing carry HTTP Content-Signal: ai-train=no and Link headers pointing to the policy. These delivery notices do not mean that audio, video or text files contain embedded XMP metadata.
What the notice can establish
The notice communicates a use restriction. It does not prevent copying or model learning, prove that a recipient read the notice, or guarantee compliance. Image metadata can be removed, and HTTP headers may not travel with a saved copy. A watermark is an optional visible notice, not a substitute for the rights holder’s permission.
